From the Executive Director: Bridging Research and Quality Activities in Healthcare

The Victorian Research Translation Centre Collaborative of Monash Partners, Melbourne Academic Centre for Health and Western Alliance, recently held an inaugural state-wide Summit focused on Bridging Research and Quality Activities in Healthcare.

Clinical quality registries, low-risk research, and quality improvement are essential for  improving clinical care and service delivery, and embedding research in healthcare. Supporting governance of all project activities and identifying when activities require formal ethics review remains a challenge. Delays, duplication, and inefficiencies plague projects caught in the ‘grey zone’ between research and quality improvement.

This isn’t just an Australian issue. Globally, the grey zone consumes resources and stalls progress. Without clear agreement and efficient pathways, projects are often designed without appropriate support and governance, and do not achieve their potential benefits to health services and the community.

The Summit brought together all relevant stakeholders, including quality leads, research managers, research directors, clinician researchers, consumer partners, data leads, legal officers to:

  • Develop clarity and understanding about ethical and governance considerations for projects conducted through healthcare activity,
  • Simplify systems through guiding principles in order to build harmonised, efficient governance pathways,
  • Strengthen collaboration through sharing learnings, showcasing exemplars amd debating ideas.

Thank you to all who attended and identified principles and priorities to pave the way forward.

For those wishing to continue to be involved, please register your interest here. Thank you for working with us to improve care in Victoria.
