Australia’s first National Health and Medical Research Strategy released

Monash Partners Health Translation Network, as part of the Australian Health Research Alliance (AHRA), has welcomed the launch of Australia’s inaugural National Health and Medical Research Strategy 2026-2036, recognising it as an important step toward a more connected, equitable and impact-focused health and medical research system.

The Strategy sets a national framework to strengthen Australia’s health and medical research capability while accelerating the translation of evidence and innovation into better care for patients and communities.

Importantly, the Strategy recognises the critical role of Research Translation Centres (RTCs) in strengthening Australia’s health and medical research ecosystem. It identifies RTCs as an important interface between national priorities and local health systems and commits to evaluating, supporting and expanding the model.

AHRA has particularly welcomed the Strategy’s emphasis on:

  • meaningful consumer and community involvement in research,
  • strengthening Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research through Indigenous leadership and culturally safe approaches,
  • improving equity in participation and outcomes, particularly for regional, rural and remote communities,
  • stronger collaboration across governments, health services, universities, research institutes and industry, and
  • strengthening Australia’s clinical trials environment and health data systems.

As part of AHRA’s national network, Monash Partners looks forward to working with the Australian Government and partners to support delivery of the Strategy and ensure it leads to measurable improvements in care, access and outcomes for all Australians.
