The launch of Australia’s first National Health and Medical Research Strategy 2026-2036 provides a clear, long-term vision for strengthening Australia’s health and medical research system. The Strategy aims to improve health outcomes through greater coordination, stronger partnerships, a sustainable research workforce and a more effective pathway from discovery to translation and implementation.
As a member of the Australian Health Research Alliance (AHRA), Monash Partners welcomes the Strategy and its recognition of Research Translation Centres as a critical link between national research priorities and local health systems. This acknowledgement reflects the important role that translation plays in ensuring research delivers meaningful benefits for patients, communities and healthcare services.
The Strategy aligns strongly with priorities already being advanced across the AHRA network and by Monash Partners, including consumer and community involvement in research, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, health equity, clinical trials and strengthening health data systems. These priorities recognise that improving health outcomes requires collaboration across the entire research and healthcare ecosystem.
Importantly, the release of the Strategy comes at a time of increasing national focus on research translation. AHRA recently convened in Canberra to strengthen engagement with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and discuss opportunities to further embed research into healthcare delivery. These conversations highlighted the growing recognition that translation is essential to achieving the impact envisioned by the National Strategy.
We also look forward to the forthcoming NHMRC Research Translation Strategy, which will provide further direction on how Australia can accelerate the uptake of evidence into policy, practice and healthcare systems. Together, these complementary strategies have the potential to strengthen the pathway from research discovery to real-world health improvements.
At Monash Partners, we are committed to working with our partners across AHRA, government, health services, universities, consumers and communities to support implementation of the National Health and Medical Research Strategy. The next decade presents an important opportunity to build a more connected, equitable and impact-focused health and medical research system. We look forward to contributing to that vision and helping ensure that research continues to deliver better health for our communities.
