From the Executive Director: Advancing value-based healthcare: From discussion to action

As healthcare systems across Australia face increasing demand, workforce pressures and rising costs, there has never been a more important time to focus on delivering care that achieves the best possible outcomes for patients while making the most effective use of available resources.

This was the focus of a recent Monash Partners Council and CEO meeting, where we were joined by Professor Euan Wallace, Dean, Sub-Faculty of Clinical and Molecular Medicine at Monash University, for a thought-provoking discussion on value-based healthcare and what it could mean for the future of our health system.

Professor Wallace challenged us to think beyond individual organisations and consider the entire patient journey – from prevention and diagnosis through to treatment, recovery and care at home. The discussion highlighted the importance of measuring outcomes that matter to patients, understanding  their needs and experiences across the full care journey, and identifying and prioritising opportunities to improve and integrate care across hospital, primary care, community and home-based settings.

Importantly, the conversation reinforced the unique role Monash Partners can play in bringing together health services, research institutes, universities and community partners to address complex, system-wide challenges. Through our collaborative network, we are well placed to support the evidence generation, health economics, implementation science and clinician engagement needed to drive meaningful change.

These themes align closely with the focus of our 2026 Annual Symposium, Maximising Value-Based Care in the Next Decade, to be held on Thursday 5 November. The symposium will bring together leaders from across healthcare, research and policy to explore how we can deliver better outcomes and experiences for patients while supporting a sustainable health system.

We are delighted to welcome The Hon. Martin Foley, former Victorian Minister for Health and Board Chair, Bayside Health, who will deliver the keynote address. This will be followed by a CEO panel examining the opportunities, challenges and practical steps required to advance value-based care across our health system.

As a partnership dedicated to improving health outcomes through collaboration, innovation and translation, Monash Partners is well positioned to contribute to this important conversation. By working together across organisational boundaries and care settings, we can help shape a more connected, evidence-informed and sustainable healthcare system for the communities we serve.

I look forward to continuing this important discussion with many of you at the symposium.
