Our aims and priorities are to:

• Leverage Alfred Health’s ICU initiated extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) service into a research network using the international ECMO registry (ELSO)
• Develop international perioperative medicine guidelines for endpoint definitions in large clinical trials; e.g. organ injury/failure and disability-free survival
• Continue progress on four multicentre clinical trials investigating treatments to improve quality of recovery and reduce complications after major surgery
• Facilitate improved enhanced recovery programs for hip and knee replacement surgery
• Trauma systems development, we are leading national and international efforts to:
  • Reduce injury burden through the MAIN (Monash Alfred Injury Network)
  • Improve prehospital and emergency care of critical illness through the Centre for Research Excellence on Prehospital Care and associated centres
  • Improve blood transfusion science and practice through the Centre of Research Excellence in Patient Blood Management in Critical Illness and Trauma.

The EMCR Co-Lead is Neil Glassford, an intensivist and clinical researcher at Monash Health, recognised for his leadership in critical care research and research capacity building.

In 2021 a Monash Partners Emergency Care subtheme was established under the leadership of Professor Diana Egerton-Warburton. The theme provides a unique opportunity for collaborative research and translation to improve healthcare for the community. The subtheme focuses on the problem of optimal, equitable access to emergency care and has led a large scale, collaborative funding proposal to address this complex space.
